TREES AND BRANCHES AND LIMBS, OH MY!

Irony is present in so many aspects of life. Today was no exception.

Following a powerful thunderstorm, I was pleased to see a new poetry prompt by Mariya Koleva–Branch of a Tree . How ironic to find this prompt.  Fallen tree branches and limbs dot the landscape of our city. We were spared major damages but many people experienced the wrath of fierce winds as they took down tall trees, fences, even rooftops.

Trees are such an integral part of life, it seems to me.

2013 SILVER MAPLE

I am thrilled to look out the window of my writing room  each day to see the changing beauty of this amazing maple tree in all seasons.

Thankful to be spared, I wrote a poem in response to this timely prompt.

HAIKU ON JULY STORM

wind has subsided

silver maple tree stands tall

I exhale with thanks

THE ECOPOETRY ANTHOLOGY–POETS CELEBRATE NATURE, ENVIRONMENT!

Poetry Month , for me, always brings to mind the voices of those whose lines have captured the ages and stages of our living world.

For those who are keen about nature and the environment as captured by poets, you might want to check out The Ecopoetry Anthology (Trinity Press, 2013).

It is a treasure of poetry, an anthology of several hundred pages, with an introduction by poet, Robert Hass.

With a preliminary section of more historical poets such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost,  the book continues with a diverse collection of later Twentieth Century to recent poets, from W.S. Merwin to Jane Hirshfield.  The poetry ranges in format and topic, from lyrical and concrete poems to topics of bears and birds, whales and trees.

This is an epic anthology of poetry. As a salute to the scale of this collection, I made a Wordle poem of the poets, using a Moss colour palette that seemed to fit the contents of this book. Ironically, the random shape arrangement of names is almost leaf-like.

The Ecopoetry Anthology is not just a Spring read but an all-season read that will become a favoured choice on your bookshelf!
