POETRY AND PLACES!

National Poetry Month is moving so quickly!

Poetry has taken me to places that I might never see, times I did not know.

2006 Poppies In Flanders Fields

For one, a lengthy poem took me back to the time when my Dad was in school, a one-room schoolhouse in rural Ontario. He then memorized The Brook, a lengthy poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Much to my surprise, as I practised my presentation of this poem, my Dad joined in with a few lines from the same poem.

Perhaps it is due to the focus on Titanic this week but one poem that impressed me so much years ago was the epic poem on this maritime tragedy by Canadian poet E.J. Pratt . If you would like to take a look check out the lengthy work at this link for The Titanic.

Just a few years ago, I travelled to Europe to visit battlefields of the first and second world wars. It was a immense moment to actually stand In Flanders Fields, captured in John McCrae‘s poem so many years ago. This photo that I took speaks to me of that place and poem.

Do you have a poem that has taken you to another place? Please share.
